Pet Waste Tips

Pet Waste in LakePet waste is one of the many contributors to stormwater pollution that can negatively affect water quality.

Each gram of pet waste contains over 20,000,000 colonies of disease-causing organisms, including roundworms, Giardia, Salmonella, E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma and Parvovirus which can make humans and pets sick if they come into contact with it.  In addition, nutrients in pet waste can wash into our lakes and streams creating harmful algal blooms that reduce dissolved oxygen levels, kill fish and make it a recreational and public safety hazard for those enjoying the affected waterways.

What can you do?

  • Don't forget that plastic bag during your walk!
  • Picking up your pet's waste and depositing it in a trash can keeps it from washing into our local waterways.
  • When you're out with your pet, utilize the pet waste stations around Clemmons, or use your trash bin at home and remember to “Scoop the Poop”!
